AACC NEWS AND EVENTS

NOVEMBER 2023

G'Day from AACC President,

Jackie Yuen

Dear AACC Members and Friends,

The highlight this past month was our SF Aussie Walkabout on November 1 at SF City Hall with 20 participants. We were welcomed by Mark Chandler from Mayor London Breed's office, who gave us background on the historic City Hall Building. From there, we were in the hands of Del Seymour, the 'Mayor' of the Tenderloin and advocate for the homeless. We walked the Market Street boulevard and were introduced to several non-profit agencies and arts and cultural centers.

It was for me, and most of the group, an enlightening experience as it was the first time we'd visited these sites, and were amazed at the diversity of services being offered.

Suffice to say, the walk provided us with new perspectives on what's happening in the city and what we may be able to do to initiate change. The subject is a complex one and the AACC is intent on keeping an active dialogue. If you have any thoughts on how we can have a more positive impact, please let me or Melissa know.

For the month ahead, please join us for some great AACC events:

December 1st - Monthly Coffee Meet Up

December 7th -  AACC Christmas Party

February 3rd - Australian Gala tickets will be on sale soon, stay tuned!

It's now the week of Thanksgiving and an opportune time to reflect - I'm grateful for the wonderful members of the AACC Board who support me and Melissa in our endeavors. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Dawn Lillington, Russ Mansky, Gordon Stirling, Helen Fairclough, Cameron Briggs, Scott McIntyre, Tyler Dixon and Catherine Bishop. Hope this finds you all well. Since we last caught up, Melbourne has transformed into a sea of flowers, and we kicked off our annual racing carnival with the legendary Melbourne Cup stealing the show.

The Reserve Bank of Australia's rate increase announcement is casting a bit of a shadow, especially for businesses and households feeling the pinch. Times are tough for some folks, and this rate hike adds another layer of complexity.

On the work front, the WorkCover scheme is keeping employers on their toes with some anticipated new legislation designed to modernise the system. The Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry, and Regions has unleashed the "Made in Victoria – Energy Technologies Manufacturing Program", offering grants up to $750,000! The mission? To get Victorian manufacturers into renewable energy — wind, hydro, batteries, hydrogen, solar etc. It's a golden ticket for manufacturers to ramp up, mix things up, or shift toward the booming new energy industries.

Shifting gears to the city of Melbourne where the festive season is underway:

Always Live - 17 days of Live Music across Victoria running from  November 24 to December 10.

BBC Earth Experience - an immersive journey, with bespoke narration from David Attenborough, features breath-taking footage from Seven Worlds, One Planet, projected on multiple multi-angle screens using the very latest digital screen technology. Until January 28, 2024.

Oz Comic Con Christmas Edition is December 9 & 10.

Looking ahead, Boxing Day Test is just around the corner and in the new year, the  as we step into the new year, the city once again gears up for the city hosts the Australian Open from January 14 - 28 and Tim Minchin’s new Musical Ground Hog Day opens in January, 2024.

So, there you have it—a snapshot of what's happening across Victoria.

    Until next time.

    Cheers Helen
