Dear AACC Members and Friends,

As many of you would be aware, the Australian Government has announced a referendum to be held on Saturday 14 October, 2023, to recognize the First Peoples of Australia in the Constitution by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament. For those eligible to vote, the Australian Consulate is open for in-person voting so please see details below for dates and times. 

We have a busy schedule this month, so please join us for some great AACC events:

2 WEEKS TO GO - 11TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL GOLF SCRAMBLE

Our annual golf tournament is only 2 weeks away! It's not too late to register your foursome.  

Players will be competing in a scramble format, against members of 9 international organizations based in the Bay Area. There will also be on-course games and competitions and the chance to win great prizes - including a $20,000 cash prize for a Hole in One!

THE POWER OF GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP FOR EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

Last week we had the pleasure of co-hosting CSIRO Chief Scientist Prof Bronwyn Fox in conversation with BioMADE's Dr Kathryn Brink. The wide ranging conversation covered insights around the opportunities and challenges in science, innovation, collaboration, and leadership. The Bay Area Council's recently refurbished Klamath historic ship provided a unique location for this event.

SAN FRANCISCO/SYDNEY SISTER CITIES INAUGURAL MEETING

The San Francisco representatives for the San Francisco/Sydney Sister Cities Committee held their inaugural meeting in late August! Attendees discussed the role they can play in aligning the Cities toward sustainable and equitable futures.

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTES SPEARHEAD GLOBAL EFFORTS IN CLEAN ENERGY INNOVATION

Six of the nation’s leading research institutions, including Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, have united with international researchers to spearhead innovation to address challenges in clean energy production and storage.

In a joint effort between Australia, the US, Canada, and the UK, two multi-lateral research projects have been announced as part of the National Science Foundation Global Centers in Climate Change and Clean Energy (NSF Global Centers) program.

Together, these countries have pledged more than AU$118 million in investment in the NSF Global Centers program over five years to tackle challenges posed by climate change as the world moves towards net zero.

NATIONAL LEGION WEEK

SEPTEMBER 17 - 23 2023

The Royal Canadian Legion is the oldest Commonwealth VSO in the Bay Area. Over the years they have had several Australian veterans who have regularly participated in the annual ANZAC Day services in San Francisco. During National Legion Week, the Royal Canadian Legion will be posting profiles and stories about the branch and its members across the Commonwealth, including Trevor Page, a New Zealand veteran who works to honor ANZAC veterans and graves throughout North America.

2023 AFL GRAND FINAL WATCH PARTY IN SAN FRANCISCO

The Golden Gate Australian Football League is once again teaming up with BuzzWorks to bring you the most fair-dinkum AFL Grand Final watch party in the Bay Area! They've rented out the entire venue to show the 2023 AFL Grand Final on EVERY SCREEN, including the huge jumbo screen behind the bar.

This is the best way to watch the AFL Grand Final in San Francisco!

PUB CHOIR IN SAN FRANCISCO

After multiple attempts, thwarted by plumbing mishaps and a global pandemic, Pub Choir finally played a show in San Francisco on September 14 2023! 690 friends filled the sold out Great American Music Hall, choir master Astrid Jorgensen managed to teach her arrangement of a beloved early 90s classic through the medium of slides and gifs, and a great night was had by all!
